Catalogue Note
These panels would probably originally have formed part of a frieze or similar room decoration. A comparable set, originally comprising forty seven heads, was once in the Gonzaga Palace at San Martino di Gusnaga, near Mantua (for which see A.J. Koop, `The Bramantino portraits from San Martino di Gusnaga', in The Burlington Magazine, vol. VIII, 1905, p. 135ff) and it is likely that these panels were also of Lombard origin.
