The sitter was the fourth son of Admiral Sir Philip Bowes Vere Broke, the hero of the Shannon and the Chesapeake, and his wife, Sarah, daughter of Sir William Middleton, Bt., of Shrubland. He succeeded his brother to the baronetcy in 1855 and assumed the additional surname of Middleton. On 27th August 1853 he married Albinia Maria, daughter of Thomas Evans, of Lyminster, Sussex, whose portrait was painted by Richard Buckner (see following lot).
The sitter served at the Battle of Navarino in 1827, and he later took part in the action at St Jean D'Acre in 1840. In 1854 he commanded the H.M.S. Gladiator in the Baltic, and served at Sebastopol.
