Catalogue Note

The sitter was the daughter of the Rev. Sir Richard Rycroft, Bt., and his wife, Penelope, daughter of the Rev. Richard Stonehewer.  In 1791 she married Nathaniel Lee Acton (see lot 294), as his second wife.

This portrait derives from the portrait which now hangs in the Huntington, which was described by Duveen as "the finest Romney in existence" (Letter from Joseph Duveen to Henry E. Huntington, 9th August 1915) when it was sold from the family collection.
