Catalogue Note

The sitter was the son of Robert Broke of Nacton (see lot 268), and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Hewett.  In 1732 he married Anne, daughter of Martin Bowes, of Bury St-Edmunds.  He was succeeded by his only son Philip Bowes Broke (1749-1801).
