Catalogue Note

The sitter was the son of Robert Cutler of The Chantry, Sproughton, near Ipswich, and his wife, Alice, daughter of Thomas Gardiner of Clemsford in Suffolk.  In circa 1617 he married Joan, daughter of Lionel Biggs of Clemsford.  The young boy is likely to be the sitter's eldest son, Benjamin, who married Jane, daughter of Thomas Bull of Hawton, Suffolk.
