Catalogue Note

Sir Richard Broke (d.1529) was the son of Thomas Broke of Leighton, Cheshire. He was a member of Gray's Inn, and his clients included the Duke of Buckingham. In 1514 he obtained the manor of Nacton in Suffolk, and in 1526 he rebuilt the manor house. The date of the present picture precludes an identification of the sitter as Sir Richard Broke, and the portrait is likely to portray an unknown member of the judiciary from the Jacobean period.
