Catalogue Note
The sitter was the son of Henry Radcliffe, Earl of Sussex, and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk. He was active in the negotiations for the marriage of Queen Mary and Philip II and was later appointed Lord Deputy of Ireland. He performed this role with great ability and on the accession of Elizabeth he was reappointed to the post. He was later appointed Lord Lieutenant of the North. He married firstly, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Wriothesley, 1st Earl of Southampton. Following her death in 1555, he married secondly Frances, sister of Sir Henry Sidney, and daughter of Sir William Sidney, of Penshurst, Kent.
