Halifax, Nova Scotia, two commemorative copper halfpenny tokens

issued in celebration of the Shannon and Chesapeake action and dated 1814, the obverses depicting the effigy of Captain Broke in full uniform and reverses with the seated figure of Britannia before a view of the ships in action on the horizon, in worn condition; together with a Centenary bronze medallet, 1913, by C. & S. Co., "Presented by two Grand-Daughters of Captain Philip Broke", with Broke's uniformed bust and showing the two vessels locked in combat, dated 1813-1913, extremely fine condition

The two tokens, with designs loosely based on contemporary English copper coins, were evidently used in local circulation and have become worn.  They are struck from differing obverse and reverse dies and represent both known varieties of the piece (see Milford Haven, op. cit., for further details).  The tokens may well have been acquired circa 1913 when the designs for the privately-commissioned Centenary medallet were being prepared.
