The sitter was the son of Sir Robert Mordaunt, 2nd Bt., and his wife, Amy, daughter of Sir Austin Southerton. In 1637 he married Katherine, daughter of Sir Lionel Tollemache, 2nd Bt. of Helmingham, and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of John, Lord Stanhope of Harrington.
