A finely painted triptych icon, early 18th century

the central panel depicting the Crucifixion flanked by four hermits and the warrior Saints John and Demetrius below Saints Haralampi, Zosima, Blasium, Euphemia and Sebatius, the left wing depicting a procession of Bishop Saints and miniature images of the Deisis, the 'unsleepy eye' and our lady Pecherskaya, on the right wing a procession of Holy Women and miniature images of Christ of the Passion, deeds of the Guardian angel and Miracle of Chonae (Chudo v Khonekh), the exterior of the wings decorated with folkloric designs

This triptych is an exceptional example of its kind, boasting particularly skillful draughtsmanship and rich iconography. The incorporation of themes from the Old Testament links earlier prophetic visions with the Crucifiction, while the depiction of the Miracle of Chonae evokes the famous Chudov Monastery in Moscow, which was built and dedicated in 1504 to its memory.
