In 1920 Bilibin travelled to Cairo to work on a series of sketches for frescoes inspired by images from Byzantium. A number of his Egyptian landscapes were exhibited at his one man show in Alexandria in 1924 shortly after he settled there with his wife, Alexandra Schekatikhina-Pototskaya.
