Catalogue Note

The illustrations by Filonov reveal the influence of Cubo-Futurism, although still retaining traces of his earlier Symbolist background. The work is a two-part cantata based on the ancient folk song about Ivan the Steward and on the current World War. Using both past and present Filonov shows that love and life survive despite death and battle.
