Catalogue Note

Mayakovsky believed passionately in subjugating his earlier sentimental and sensitive poetry to his avowed responsibility as a revolutionary poet: the artist’s responsibility was to reshape and reconstruct the new Socialist culture and society. His poems would be filled with images of revolution and the new workplace. This satirical poem was written during the American intervention in the Russian Civil War. The Russian peasant, Ivan, 150 million heads in size, with heels as huge as the Caspian Steppes, strides across the Atlantic Ocean to force the American President Woodrow Wyatt into one-to-one combat.
