it is has been assumed that this is the first and only publication in russian of malevich’s seminal essay. Some of the material here is included in Malevich’s O novykh sistemakh v iskusstve [On New Systems in Art], published in Vitebsk in 1919. The binding of this present work is similar to others of the time and it is most likely that this essay was published around the time of the larger, more complete work. Malevich traces the development of modern art movements and credits Cézanne with showing Cubists a natural style. In the light of the importance of Cubism on Malevich and the other Futurists this becomes an important piece.
