Catalogue Note

"Evreinov was a theatre director in the line of Stanislavsky and Meyerhold whom he had succeeded at Vera Komissarzhevskaya's Dramatic Theatre in St Petersburg. His theories must be seen in the then recent tradition of Russian theatre, of plays staged not for commercial success, but for their value as an art form" (S. Compton, The world backwards: Russian Futurist books 1912-16, London 1978, p.46).
