8vo (197 x 137mm.), [limited to 2000 copies], original cloth-backed printed boards, boards darkened
This was Mayakovsky’s first major collection of verse and it signified his progression within the literary world as a professional writer, encouraged by David Burliuk to move from painting to poetry. It contains one of his most important pieces “Oblako v shtanakh [A Cloud in Trousers]", first published separately in 1915 by Osip Brik (see lot 22). It was the reading of this poem at the house of Osip and Lili Brik that shaped much of the rest of Mayakovsky’s life. Osip Brik was so impressed that he paid for its publication and for much of his later work, and his wife Lili fell in love with the poet and embarked upon a long affair with him.
