  • A collection of 21 original illustrations for Gottfried Merzbacher's Aus den Hochregionen des Kaukasus (Leipzig: Duncker & Humbolt, 1901)
pen and ink or grey wash over pencil, some heightened with white, each signed with initials "E.T.C.", many captioned in the image or on the mount, on card or board, some mounted on thicker card (21)

Catalogue Note

Edward Theodore Compton (1849-1921) was born in London and trained as an artist, painting English landscapes, however he moved to Germany and settled in Munich in 1869. He was a keen mountaineer and member of the British and later the German and Austrian Alpine Clubs and became one of the first artists to dedicate his art to mountain landscapes, especially the Alps. He often exhibited at the Royal Academy and illustrated many books for British and German publishers.

The sheets present here have been stamped with a number on the reverse and are numbered 120-122, 130-138, 142-147, 149-151.
