Catalogue Note

first separate edition of Sechenov's work, originally published in Meditsinskii vestnik for 1863, in which he describes the physiological origins of various psychological processes. His thesis brought him into trouble with the authorities as it was considered morally subversive, and he was forced to change the title from his original "An attempt to introduce physiology as the basis of psychological processes".

Sechenov made great contributions to neurophysiology and his followers included Pavlov (see lots 174-177), who termed him "the father of Russian physiology".
