Hellyer 225; Ex-Libris 136; The Russian Avant-Garde Book 79
The first edition of this important work was issued in 1912. it is one of the outstanding works of the russian avant-garde and was the first collaboration between kruchenykh and khlebnikov. The poem describes a game of cards played in Hell between sinners and devils and in defiance of Symbolist traditions the devils do not win. Although the work has echoes of Russian folkloric history and pictorial symbols, the free-form text and grotesque illustrations are radical and modern and create a vivid imagery. This second edition was enlarged and Goncharova’s illustrations were replaced with those by Rozanova and Malevich.
