Catalogue Note

first edition. "Kovalsky's important theoretical work... on the analysis of the proper motion of 3,136 stars of Bradley's catalog presented the first practical method of discovering the rotation of the Galaxy from the proper motion of the stars" (DSB VII, p.481). Kovalski began lecturing in astronomy at Kazan University in 1850 and continued until his death in 1884; he was also director of the observatory there.
