Catalogue Note

Pasternak's famous novel was made into the Oscar-winning epic, starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, by David Lean (1965). It also won the Nobel Prize for Literature for Pasternak in 1958; however, the Soviet authorities forbade him to accept it and prohibited the publication of his works in the USSR.

The manuscript was smuggled out of the USSR by the publisher, Gian Giacomo Feltrinelli, an active communist, despite the anti-communist leanings of Pasternak and the pressure put on Feltrinelli by other communists not to publish. The novel was a success for more than just Pasternak, as it made the Feltrinelli publishing house's reputation.
