Catalogue Note

Boris Chailiapin, the son of famous Bass Fedor Chaliapin, was an incredibly talented artist in his own right.  He was named Boris after Fedor Chaliapin's favorite operatic role, Boris Godunov.  In 1919 Boris Chaliapin studied with Shukhaev in St. Petersburg and and Arkhipov in Moscow. Known for his skilled portraits of the luminaries of his day, Chaliapin painted everyone from conductor Sergei Kussevitsky, sculptors Konenkov and Troubetskoy, artist Konstantin Korovin, with whom he studied, to Rachmaninoff, and of course Fedor Chaliapin himself.
