Catalogue Note

Vera Rockline, born Schlezinger, studied with Ilya Mashkov and Alexandra Exter, and was known to be one of Mashkov's most talented students. She left Russia in 1919 and spent time in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi (formerly Tiflis) before arriving in Paris in 1921. The beautiful city of Tbilisi with the river Kura running through it, the old town with its narrow winding streets, and looming industry inspired the present Cubist view of the city.

Vera Rockline was considered an exceptional talent in the School of Paris, a talent, critic and art historian Waldemar Georges considered truly ``authentic'' (Waldemar Georges, La Vie Mondiale, November 15, 1934). In 1922 Rockline exhibited at the Paris Salon d'Automne and by March 1925 she had her first solo exhibition at Galerie Vildrac. In the preface to the gallery exhibition, leading Parisian couturier Paul Poiret exclaimed:
