Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky

The present work by Aivazovsky depicts nature at its most awe-inspiring and cruel.  Two lone survivors can be seen in the lower right of the painting, desperately awaiting rescue in the aftermath of a destructive storm. The palette is restricted to soft shades of pink and blue, heightened with an inimitable crystalline light that suffuses the composition with additional drama and majesty. This nuanced work serves as a meditation on nature’s mysteries. Two ships slowly emerge at dawn from the hazy distance, hardly disturbing the stillness of the expansive sea, an often used device to showcase Aivazovsky’s technical wizardry in conveying a still, atmospheric, panoramic view (see fig. 1).  The white sea gulls, familiar through so many of Aivazovsky’s turbulent storms, freely circulate below, two mere specks in the landscape.
