Zinaida Evgenievna Serebriakova

This sumptuous still-life dates to the early thirties, a period in which Serebriakova often painted this genre. As in Serebriakova’s earlier works in which she showcased the family sphere, warmth and the intimacy of domesticity is underscored (see fig. 1). The present lot conveys what few artists were able to achieve in this genre, a sensuality and piquancy of inanimate objects.  Serebriakova reinvigorated the still-life form through her rhythmic and bold application of color, resulting in a unique suppleness that is characteristic of her entire oeuvre.
