Catalogue Note

Both paintings are contemporary copies after works by Christoph Paudiss of which more versions and copies are known; one version of the former was recorded in the Chanenko Collection, Kiev in 1899, no. 272, as by Aert de Gelder, and attributed to Paudiss according to the R.K.D. The latter is after the original sold Vienna, Christie's, 29/30 October 1996, lot 71. (See W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, vol. IV, Landau/Pfalz 1989, p. 2323, no. 1581, reproduced p. 2354).

Both bear a label on the frame with an old inventory number: 59a, 59b.
