Catalogue Note

Kändler's work records for 1771 list: "Eine grosse Terrine in Gestalt eines Hahnes ganz neu modelliret. [A large tureen in the form of a male chicken completely newly modeled. The proposed chicken is depicted seated and in all respects natural in its posture, through the middle of the body is the opening for the separation of the cover. And it was requested as the companion to the already existing hen tureen.]

A similar cock tureen is illustrated and discussed by Rainer Rückert, Meissener Porzellan 1710-1810, p. 200 and pl. 281, no. 1144. A similar pair is illustrated by Dr. K. Berling, Meissen China, p. 60, fig. 139.
