Catalogue Note

A Worcester pierced basket and two plates, attributed to the "London atelier of James Giles" and all painted with similar fruit clusters and insects, particularly the distinctive butterfly, are illustrated by Simon Spero and John Sandon, Worcester Porcelain 1751-1790, The Zorensky Collection, pp. 332-33, nos. 410 and 412. Further examples exhibiting the same bold style of decoration associated with Giles are illustrated by Stephen Hanscombe, James Giles, China and Glass Painter (1718-80), nos. 46 (a plate), 49 (a leaf dish), 50 (an oval dish) and 51 (a coffee pot and cover).
