Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Hotham, baronets, created barons in 1797, of Dalton Hall, Dalton Holme, Beverley and Scarborough Hall, Lockington, Driffield, probably for Sir Charles Hotham, 5th baronet, colonel of the Horse Grenadier Guards, Groom of the Bedchamber and M.P. for Beverley. He married in 1724 Gertrude, eldest daughter of Philip, Earl of Chesterfield, and he died in 1738. His father-in-law received 5,893 ozs of plate on being posted as Ambassador of the Hague, much of it made by Paul de Lamerie and supplied by Paul Crespin. Among these are the Chesterfield Wine Coolers of 1727, now jointly owned by the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Museums of Scotland.
