Catalogue Note

The subject of Toby Philpot is taken from an English print, first published in 1768. The print is also the source of the English pottery Toby jugs, for examples of which see the adjacent lots.

A jug of this pattern was in the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Rafi Y. Mottahedeh, illustrated by John Ayers and David Howard, China for the West, Vol. I, p. 350, and subsequently sold, Sotheby's, New York, January 30, 1985, lot 216.
