In this image, Hopper evidences his particular skill at depicting both the nocturnal city scene as well as the evocative presence of a lone figure.  The richly inked and deeply etched lines in the foliage stand in stark contrast to the dramatically wiped areas representing both the pale natural moonlight and the harsh electric light from the street lamp.   While some may interpret the overall effect as ominous, others may sense that particular state of solitude which exists only in the city at night.
