Catalogue Note

Depicting the monumental Prince's Gates at the entrance to the Albert memorial in London's Hyde Park, the present work exemplifies the artist's ongoing exploration of city environments and the dynamic interaction between architecture, traffic and people; a multifaceted relationship that is heightened by the artist's use of richly textured layers of paint.

Born in Belfast, McWilliams studied at the University of Ulster and the Royal Academy Schools, London. He has won seventeen awards in the last eight years and has had solo shows at galleries such as The Solomon Gallery, Dublin and the John Martin Gallery, London. His work is also included in the collections of institutions such as The Ulster Museum, Belfast; The Arts Council of Northern Ireland; The Allied Irish Bank and The Queens University, Belfast.
