Catalogue Note

The intense hues of Purple Tree recall both contemporary culture as well as the sublime 19th Century landscapes of artists such as Caspar David Friedrich and have become trademarks of Magill's distinctive style (see for example Close (2000, Coll. Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane)) . Her landscapes are topographically non-specific however they are crucial in providing the setting for her exploration of contemporary issues.  Although born in Ontario, Canada, Magill was brought up in Antrim and memories of what she calls 'the landscape of her past' have provided vital stimulus for her work.

Magill's first major solo exhibition took place at the Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol in 1990, and she was also included in the British Art Show of that year. Since then, she has exhibited extensively in Europe and the U.S including solo shows at the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane; The Kerlin Gallery, Dublin and the Southampton City Art Gallery. Her work is included in numerous public collections including those of The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; The Hugh Lane as well as the British Arts Council and the National Gallery of Australia.
