Ian Charlesworth b.1970

From a series known as 'The Line Works', the oscillating linear forms of Everafter have become a distinctive emblem of Charlesworth's style. They formed the basis of the artist's drawing on the ceiling of the Northern Irish pavilion at the 2005 Venice Biennale and are inspired by the urban grafitti experienced in his home town of Belfast. Within the context of Venice, the expressive forms gained a greater significance when placed within the tradition of painted ceilings usually reserved for Renaissance frescoes. Created by moving a burning candle along the surface a different speeds, his line works, 'are specifically concerned with maintaining a direct link between the artist’s body and the ‘gestural’ mark, whilst at the same time acknowledging the difficulty in communicating psychological or expressive content' (Ian Charlesworth, 2005).

Having studied at the University of Ulster and de Montford University, Leicester, Charlesworth recently completed a fellowship at the British School in Rome. As well as in Venice and Rome, he has also exhibited at galleries including The Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast; La Sala Naranja, Valencia and The Herzlia Museum, Tel Aviv.
