David Crone b.1937

Having lived and worked in Belfast for over fifty years, Crone moved to the countryside of Co.Down in 1994. Although there is no specific delineation in his work between rural and urban subjects, the move enabled him to develop his eye for landscape in more peaceful surroundings and his subsequent work has taken on a more contemplative quality. 

The multi-layered nature of the present work where the distinction between background and foreground is blurred and various strands of foliage merge in and out of each other, is typical of his recent oeuvre. Combining a plethora of different experiences and images, his recent pictures are, as Aidan Dunne concludes, 'working models of what it is to be in the world' (Aidan Dunne, in the foreword, David Crone, exh.cat., John Martin Gallery, London May - June 2005, unpaginated).
