Catalogue Note

Scott has long admired the stylized forms of Oriental art and design and in particular, the simple yet elegant design of the Japanese flag with its floating sun and, via a friendship with Morris Graves, Japanese screen designs and the work of Mark Tobey whose style was inspired by Chinese calligraphy. Scott first visited China in the mid 1980s and was particularly inspired by the dramatic limestone topography of Guelin in South-west China which clearly provided the visual stimulus for the undulating forms of the present work and others in the series such as Chinese Landscape 7/86 (Coll. Dublin City Art Gallery The Hugh Lane).
