Catalogue Note

In 1975, McDonnell was commissioned to paint Billingsgate Market in London by the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers (see Martyn Anglesea, Hector McDonnell, Belfast 2003, pp.13, 20 and 21, illustrated on the cover).  The picture commemorates the famous market which later moved to the Isle of Dogs and the original building on Lower Thames Street is now known as the Old Billingsgate. Whilst undertaking this commission, the artist became fascinated with the traders going about their everyday activities and Messrs Hart’s, Mounument Street, Billingsgate was inpsired by these daily visits, capturing a glimpse of the fast disappearing way of market life in central London.
