Catalogue Note

Painting within the context of the social unrest and conflict in Northern Ireland during the 1970s, Crone came under the particular influence of the bold abstract style of his Scottish contemporary Alan Davie as well as the disquieting nature of Francis Bacon's oeuvre. Garden combines these influences together with an eye for the cubist desire to disect his subject and present all the multiple facets of it within the same image.

Crone has had numerous solo exhibitions including several organized by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, solo shows with the Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast; the Kerlin Gallery, Dublin and an exhibition of his work was chosen to open the Ormeau Baths Gallery, Belfast in 1995. A retrospective of his work was held at the Ulster Museum in 1999-2000 and his work is held in numerous public collections including The Ulster Museum, Belfast; the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin and the collections of the British and Northern Irish Arts Councils.
