Catalogue Note
During the 1970s, Scott began to work with tempera on unprimed canvas without the gold leaf that had become one of his trademarks. Spurred by his interest in Oriental art and design, he visited China and Japan in the mid-80s and was inspired to turn to the theme of landscape (see lot 53). Amongst his series of Oriental landscapes, Gorse is unique in its specific focus on the Irish landscape, the bold green and yellow tones recalling the vivid earthy countryside of his birthplace.
Scott is one of the most important proponents of post-war abstraction in Ireland. Having represented Ireland at the 1960 Venice Biennale when he won the Guggenheim award, he has been acccorded with two major retrospectives of his work, at the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin in 1980 and the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane in 2002. His work is included in all major public collections in Ireland as well as the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
