Catalogue Note

Below a Cornish Sea was executed during the period when MacMiadhacháin was a member of Group 63; an exhibiting group formed in 1963 by eight artists including his friends David Crone (see lots 20 and 71), Graham Gingles (see lot 37) and Jack Pakenham (see lot 63). The final exhibition of the group took place at the Arts Council's Belfast gallery in 1973.

Born in Downpatrick, MacMiadhacháin studied at the Belfast College of Art then the N.C.A.D, Dublin before settling in Dorset where he developed a particular affinity with the sea and became especially inspired by the work of Roger Hilton, William Scott and Patrick Heron. His work is held in numerous public collections including the Tate Gallery, London; The Arts Council of Ireland and the National Self-Portrait Collection, Limerick.
