Catalogue Note
The subject in the tintypes offered here plays the role of many characters, including a boxing hooligan, an aging granny, and a dapper dandy. These images may possibly be of Frederick Vokes (1846-1888), a member of the prominent theatrical Vokes Family. Famous for their stage performances at Drury Lane and masters of the art of pantomime, the Vokeses were among England's most well-known Victorian entertainers. Frederick Vokes was considered the leader of the troupe, whose other members were Jessie, Victoria, Rosina, and Fawdon.
