Catalogue Note
De Gheyn is much better known as a draughtsman, for which he is justly reknowned. Less than fifty paintings by him are recorded, of which only one third, including this work, are known today.
The figure depicted here, closely resembles the central head of a signed drawing by De Gheyn of Three Magi bearing Gift, in the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (see I.Q. van Regteren Altena, Jacques de Gheyn..., The Hague 1983, vol. II, p. 26, no.33, reproduced vol. III, p.131, plate 248).
