Catalogue Note
An 18th century copy after Domenchino's original in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (see M. Spear, Domenichino, New Haven and London 1982, vol. I, pp. 192-4, cat.no. 52, reproduced vol. II, plate 173). The original of Domenchino's most famous secular painting was commissioned by Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini in 1616, but was it so admired by Cardinal Scipio Borghese that he took it by force from the artist, and even imprisoned him for at first refusing to give it to him.
