Catalogue Note
Verdussen studied in Antwerp under his father Peeter Verdussen, a battle painter, before going to Turin where he entered the service of Charles Emanuel III of Savoy, King of Sardinia. He most likely sojourned in Rome at some point between his departure from Turin and 1744 when he is first recorded in Marseille. His style was deeply indebted to perhaps the greatest of all battle painters, Phillips Wouwermans, although it has been tempered in the present work by the influence the bamboccianti. In 1759 he presented his reception piece to the Marseille Academy.
