The landscape is copied, with some minor differences, from the landscape of Poussin's Landscape with the body of Phocion carried out of Athens, dating from 1648, now in the collection of the Earl of Plymouth, Oakly Park, Shropshire (see A. Blunt, Nicolas Poussin, London & New York 1967, p. xvii, cat. no. 176, reproduced plate 176).
