Catalogue Note
A 19th century copy after a work traditionally ascribed to Alessandro Varotari called Padovanino (1588-1648) and his workshop representing An allegory of the Marchese del Vasto, in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 754). This is in its turn derived from an original design by Titian of which several variants exist for example in the the Alte Pinakothek, Munich. (See H. Wethey, The Paintings of Titian, vol. III, The Mythological Paintings, London 1975, , pp. 127-9, under cat. no. 1).
