Follower of Sir Peter Paul Rubens

The composition originally derives from a detail from Rubens's composition the Education of Bacchus, which is known by versions in the Gemaldegalerie, Dresden, the Burghley House collection, Lord Wimborne Collection and the Arnold de Pret Collection, Antwerp. A copy of the present detail, with some differences, by Jan Wildens is in the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Vienna (see W. Adler, Jan Wildens Der  Landschaftsmitarbeiter des Rubens, Fridingen, cat. no. G35, p. 101, reproduced fig. 52, p. 164).
