Description
- Giambattista Pittoni
- The Sacrifice of Polyxena
- oil on canvas
Catalogue Note
A studio replica after Pittoni's original design, of which there are numerous versions. The present picture, due to the lack of fluting on the column, is closest to the version Muzeum Narodowe, Poznan (see F. Boccazzi, Pittoni, Venice 1979, p. 154, cat. no. 160, reproduced fig. 237).
The subject does not appear in Homer's Illiad, but it is taken from Euripides's tragedy Hecuba, which relates events after the Trojan war.
