Catalogue Note

The painting accords with the description of one of a pair of paintings owned by Baldinucci and mentioned in his ‘Life of Dolci’, ‘Dipinse in due ovati due teste quanto il naturale, dico S. Antonino arcivescovo di Firenze, mitrato e in piviale, nella quale figura, oltre alla bellisima testa, che par viva, si ravvisa per bottone del piviale un maraviglioso giojello di perle e gemme…’ (F. Baldinucci, Notizie…, ed. F. Ranalli, 1847, vol. V, Decennale V del Secolo V, pp. 347-8).

Please could you add to the end of the note: The traditional attribution to Dolci was endorsed by the late Dr. Charles McCorquodale (written communication).
