Catalogue Note

One of Bissolo's most popular compositions, the present picture originally derives from Giovanni Bellini's lost Madonna col Bambino Vispo, which is recorded by a copy by Pier Francesco Bissolo in the National Gallery, London (see F. Heinemann, Giovanni Bellini e i Belliniani, Venice 1959, vol. I, p. 19, cat. no. 58, reproduced vol. II, plate 349). It may also be compared to a very similar composition which was sold in these rooms 10 April 2003, lot 24 for £74,400.
